I've actually included some depictions of bullying in my just-released book about a middle-school kid who moves to a new city and school. One effect the bullying has on him is to make it more difficult to become part of his new community and school. He takes a lot of grief from some bullies about his choice to engage in a community service group. It's inspiration and encouragement from his friends that enables him to press ahead in spite of the bullying. So, it seems like in addition to encouraging bystanders to intervene, it will also help to offer constructive ideas about how kids can work together to do some good in the world. Inspiring kids to start community service groups and initiatives could help by getting kids to take the focus off themselves and to unite in a desire to achieve some common good.

My own kids (one of who has ADD) endured some bullying at school and on the bus, too, which is one of the things that led me to write my book.
