Jonathan Mooney, author of the critically acclaimed books Learning Outside the Lines and The Short Bus will receive the 2008 Smart Kids Community Service Award. Jonathan founded Project Eye-to-Eye, the innovative mentoring program for students with LD & ADHD while still at Brown University, after learning to read at the age of 12. He continues to inspire and motivate audiences as a lecturer, writer, and consultant.
Mark B. Perkins, who will receive the 2008 Smart Kids Professional Achievement Award, has served as head of The Forman School in Litchfield, CT since 1995. During his tenure, Forman has become one of the nation’s top college preparatory schools for students with learning disabilities, providing students with individual attention in a stimulating and supportive environment.
Evan Paul will accept the 2008 Smart Kids Youth Achievement Award. Struggling until 9th grade with undiagnosed dyslexia, Evan turned his passion for video games into two businesses at the age of 15. As a freshman at the University of Arizona, he continues to run eGamePlace.com, now worth $20 million, and has launched the Dyslexic Dreams Foundation to help other young people with learning disabilities pursue their dreams.
Dana Buchman, the celebrated fashion designer and author of A Special Education will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
